Guru Stotram Scripture Study
The Guru Stotram is a widely chanted collection of fourteen Sanskrit verses drawn principally from the Guru Gita, a sacred dialogue between Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati preserved within the Skanda Purana. The verses reveal the nature of the Guru, the purpose of the Guru-shishya relationship, and the Guru as the luminous principle that leads the seeker from ignorance to knowledge of the Self.
The original Sanskrit verses will be studied closely, with attention to pronunciation, meaning, and contemplation. Acharya Shunya’s manuscript, Wisdom Lotus, a verse-by-verse commentary on the Guru Stotram, will be used as a study aid to help students enter more deeply into the philosophical, devotional, and non-dual significance of each verse.
Why This Study Matters
The Guru Stotram reveals Guru tattva, the sacred universal principle of illumination through which ignorance is removed and knowledge of the Self becomes clear. Through its verses, students come to understand the Guru beyond personality, sentiment, or outer form.
The text also serves as an accessible doorway into Advaita Vedanta. It unfolds the relationship between Guru, Atman, Brahman, knowledge, and liberation, helping students recognize why the Guru holds such an essential place in the tradition of Self-realization.

Exploring the Meaning of Guru through Sacred Text
The Guru Stotram Scripture Study is open to recognized disciples and to sincere seekers who are discerning the meaning of Guru, parampara, and discipleship. Through the verses of this sacred hymn, participants explore the outer Guru, the inner Guru, the living lineage, and the non-dual wisdom toward which the Guru ultimately points.
This study offers a thoughtful way to understand the Guru-shishya tradition without requiring a prior commitment to discipleship. It is especially suited to those who feel drawn to Acharya Shunya and the Sarayu Parampara and wish to understand the depth, purpose, and responsibility of this relationship.

Schedule and Duration
The study unfolds gradually over 16 sessions, allowing time for pronunciation, contemplation, and assimilation.

Meeting Schedule: Tuesdays, with a maximum of four sessions each month. No class will be held on the fifth Tuesday.

Sadhvi Ishani
Sadhvi Ishani is a senior monk and teacher of the Sarayu Parampara. A longtime disciple of Acharya Shunya, she brings steadiness, scriptural care, and lived understanding of the Guru-shishya tradition to this study.
She will guide participants through the Sanskrit verses, pronunciation, meaning, reflection, and the deeper Advaita vision of the Guru Stotram, using Acharya Shunya’s Wisdom Lotus manuscript as the principal study aid.
